OPENING
Session of Board of Education, held June, 1900
Session of 1900 opened at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 13th, in the vestry of the Mother Church. Judge S. J. Hanna, vice-president of the College, presiding, Edward A. Kimball, teacher of Christian Science, and Dr. Alfred E. Baker, teacher of Obstetrics, present.
Judge Hanna made some remarks opening the session and giving several notices, then introducing Mr. Kimball, and both he and Dr. Baker withdrew, leaving Mr. Kimball in charge.
Mr. Kimball addressed the class concerning the class work, which was introductory in its character, and also answered many questions concerning the status of members, graduates, etc.
Class to be held in the Auditorium of the Mother Church hereafter.
THURSDAY, JUNE 14TH
Definitions:
Science: Demonstrable knowledge, accurate and real. Real is divine.
Revelation: The unfolding of Truth to individual consciousness. God with us expressed as individual consciousness. God with us as harmony, etc.
One revelator and one revelation.
Revelation is a human term which ceases to be when it is fully accepted.
Revelator: The revelator always receives first the “divine afflatus”, the spiritual vision, which must afterwards be reduced to practice and be formulated and proved.
Others begin oppositely with that which appears — the outward — and work up to the spiritual vision.
Obedience: Unless absolutely obedient to the Revelator, we cannot receive the full revelation; and we are not absolutely obedient, or we would not be so far behind, instead of being with her.
Great and Prevalent Error. Great Claims of Loyalty.
Guard against any argument of error resisting absolute implicit obedience to Mrs. Eddy and to all that she orders and appoints.
If you throw stones at the Board of Education or Lectureship, etc., you are throwing stones at her.
If you question her wisdom expressed through by-laws or in any other way, you are doubting the Revelator and therefore the Revelation, working against God and shutting off health and Life.
God
What is God? (Recapitulation definition)
Principle
What is divine Principle? Cause, basis, law, government, substance, sustenance.
Teaching
Explaining to a class of, say 30, you put it as clearly as you can and perhaps ten will understand. Then you present it from another standpoint, and ten more will see. Then again and nine will comprehend and still there is one who needs further careful and patient work and he too may see.
FRIDAY, JUNE 15TH
Suffering While Teaching Is Unnecessary
Teachers may make things very hard for themselves. Some have said that teaching a class was like going through Gethsemane, and others have made statements of beliefs of suffering and a kind of martyrdom, which is all unnecessary.
Teaching Should Be Joyous
Mr. Kimball says he is nearer heaven when teaching than at many other times.
Why should meeting with a lot of nice people to commune with God be an occasion of pain and suffering?
Know that it is a joyous happy time and that the other sense is nothing but error’s claim.
Error Sends Students
Some students and some patients come to Science right from the devil. Be watchful and detect the lie and handle it. Error will send you patients that you cannot heal, that are not yet ready to be healed, and so get you all discouraged and disheartened over your failures. The same in class work.
Choice of Students
Don’t take students who are under a serious claim that fills them with fear so that they cannot properly receive the thought, everything being filtered through that claim.
Don’t take students who come to class for healing.
Take only the best thought, those who have an affection for Science, who know they want it, and are ready to obey.
Constant watchfulness and discernment needed in class and healing work.
Reviewing to Stop
Mother said that reviewing must stop even if she had to make a by-law to stop it. The reasons are that the teacher teaches better and the student is less dependent on the teacher. It is like healing a case, — saying that if it is not healed today, you will treat him again tomorrow.
Principle
Resumed discussion of Principle, — why good.
Principle is infinite. What is infinity? Without beginning and ending; indestructibility; limitless; universality; all-inclusiveness; self-existence; oneness; unity.
Avoid giving an impression of coldness by the use of the word Principle. Bring out its full meaning as being synonymous with Love.
SATURDAY, JUNE 16TH
Intelligence
Meet the old sense of its being knowledge, information, facts, etc.
It is infinite Principle.
Mind
Mind is not in matter nor in anything else, but everything is in Mind.
Mind just is. Infinite self-existent mentality, or Being.
Mind cannot be expressed in matter, for Mind is infinite, matter is finite; Mind is indestructible, matter is destructible; Mind is good, matter is evil; because of its mortality, always ending in death.
Organization of matter is destructible.
God is not A God, but God.
Never Discourage a Patient
Never say you have done all you can for a patient or tell him he must work it out himself; never discourage. This is diabolism and demonology.
No Patients in Class
It is not necessary to take a patient into class. Heal him first by teaching him all you can privately.
Every Patient Should Become a Christian Scientist
Expect every patient to become a C.S., but do not tell him so. See every patient as a seed that will increase as the sands of the sea. Your sense of things is what you will reap.
Review of Principle, Intelligence, Mind.
Mind: A unit — one supreme Mind. Not many minds.
Intelligence: Complete, satisfying, enough because all.
Principle: is Mind. Mind is divine Principle, divine consciousness, infinite self-existent being, indestructible, eternal, all-knowing, omni-science, omnipresence.
Mind and its ideas constitute divine Being.
Why is there but one Mind? Cannot know more than there is now to know, nothing for another mind to know or do, one Mind enough.
Each has all of that Mind, like figure 6, for instance, there is only one and there is that one, and we all have the same one, which is inexhaustible.
Never treat that a patient has no mind, as that treatment would result in idiocy. He has the one Mind.
Life
God is Life. Life is consciousness, divine Being, eternal Principle.
Life is in body — never say life is not in body. Body is real and we will always have body. Body is expression.
Life is everywhere and is always with man — “God with us”.
There is one infinite Life, that Life is eternal, and that Life is man’s Life, and you are that man.
Incorrect Treatment
Treating that Life is not in the body has resulted in producing abortions. Such intentional practice is murder. (Gave illustration.)
In case of loss of action — as paralysis — treating that strength is not in the arm or muscles is wrong. Strength is in the arm and muscles because it is omnipresent. Arm and muscles are real; it is matter that is unreal.
Illustration. Case of eyes — extreme need. The Christian Scientist called, told the patient she might become worse but not to mind that and explained somewhat to her. Next day she was worse and grew worse for four days. Then healer became angry that she did not improve and accused her of doing something wrong or of having some hidden sin, etc.
Mr. Kimball took the case and it was healed in a few days, the pain stopping at once. His temptation was to treat her eyes, instead of knowing the perfection of eyes and simply silencing the lie.
Knowing Is Being
Life, being, is consciousness, is knowing. To know is to be. Knowing God, knowing Truth, is Life eternal.
Man is living — has Life, because he is individual consciousness or knowing of God, good. “Beloved now are we the sons of God.”
MONDAY, JUNE 18TH
Substance
Matter is not substance. Mind and its infinite manifestations are substance.
Substance is indestructible, universal, eternal, good.
Mind and its ideas are substantive. Rocky Mountains not substance but belief.
Scientific Statement of Being Is Understood and Demonstrated
Scientific Statement of Being repeated. How much have you demonstrated of this statement? All of it a little, instead of only some of it. Mesmerism declares that we know little and can demonstrate little. It makes us repudiate our demonstration, which is repudiating our understanding, which repudiates Christ.
Man as individual consciousness does understand and is spiritual understanding.
Spirit and Soul
What are Spirit and Soul? They are one and universal; we must correct the sense of minds many and gods many.
Spirit is the opposite of matter.
Soul, the activity of Love.
Mother said, “Christian Scientists should be all Soul.”
Omnipresence
God is omnipresence, God is Mind and Mind is all, therefore, there is no presence but Mind.
Mortal space is a belief. God does not fill mortal space. God is not in a boil or between the moon and sun. Cancer was healed by knowing that cancer had no presence.
Mind the only Presence.
Omni-Action
God is omni-action. God is Mind and Mind is infinite, it is all and is infinite activity.
Omnipotence
God is omnipotence, is Mind, and Mind is good and all, hence Mind is the only power and all-power, and good is the only power.
Insomnia
Illustrated omnipotence by showing how a case of insomnia was healed. By knowing that man can’t sleep, doesn’t want to sleep, and doesn’t need to sleep. This breaks the fear of consequences from not sleeping and the patient sleeps.
Lack
Some Christian Scientists treat for God to make mortal mind give them something. Know that mortal mind can’t give you anything, hasn’t anything to give you and you don’t want or need anything from it. Takes some courage to do this.
Man has everything — which is all good, and that good is our good, not my good.
Break the fear of lack or loss, and if there is need of potatoes, potatoes will be supplied.
God is supply — not source of supply.
Source is a human sense.
Instructions for Teaching
Never mesmerize a class by expecting that they won’t understand. Know that they do understand.
There is no need of chemicalization or disturbance during class. Only two of Mr. Kimball’s students out of the last two hundred missed a lesson or had any trouble.
When teaching, bring out the highest possible conception of the subject, then if need be, come down. Growth and experience enables a teacher to teach each class from a higher plane than the last.
Man Knows, Not Believes.
Do you believe so and so?
No, the belief believes.
Man does not believe, man knows.
Love
God is Love. We cannot define Love in words but in acts. God alone defines Love, and we are on holy ground when we attempt to do so.
Love is Life. Without it, there is no Life. Love and Life are synonymous.
Manifestation of Love
Christian Scientists are the best people or the worst people on earth. Their treatment of each other is as bad sometimes as the slaughter of the Armenians by the Turks.
We must think about others, as we would have them think about us. Manifest Love in kindness, mercy, charity, patience, forgiveness, affection, etc.
Illustrations: Judgment Seat.
Suppose a case at judgment seat: Who are you? A Christian Scientist. That’s good — that’s a tendency toward good. Well, what have you done? I have been loyal to God’s chosen leader, studied Science and Health, read the literature faithfully and distributed it to others, have spoken of Science and interested many; have attended the church services, healed many diseases, been a trustee, reader, teacher, lecturer, treasurer, etc., etc. Have you loved? No. “Then I never knew you.”
Reflection of Love
A Scientist was quoted as saying in healing a certain case — “I just filled myself full of divine Love.” Does anybody know how she did it? Sounded as though she pumped it in for the occasion and then let it out again. It is only the conscious and constant reflection of Love that heals; divine Love reflected in Love.
Fear of Death
Treat every case for the fear of death. All beliefs of disease tend toward death. Love casts out fear.
Heaven
Christian Scientists are now in heaven.
Demonstrating Patients
Christian Scientists who have no patients sometimes declare that they have patients, which is sheer animal magnetism.
The one who will declare that she has no patients and cannot have any, and knows that God never made such a thing, nor disease, and that man is God’s perfect reflection, is the one who is lifting up the Christ, and the legitimate scientific result is patients, drawing all men unto the uplifted Christ.
TUESDAY, JUNE 19TH
Love, the Healer
Would the holding of the thought of Love meet the claim of death? It is Love that does all the work in Science. In all his classes with Mrs. Eddy and all interviews with her since that time, the one point that she emphasized throughout was that it is Love that heals.
In a specific claim of death, it is necessary to antidote that claim with the thought of Life, its opposite, but this should be done as in all Christian Science work, with the consciousness of Love.
Creator
How would you define God as creator? How would you define the omnific nature of God as expressed in the universe, and explain what the universe is?
Infinite Mind and its spiritual ideas, which are its expression.
This infinite full expression is the universe, which is spiritual because Mind is Spirit.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20TH
Teaching About God
This is the place where the student feels that he has lost his God, lost the old sense and has not gained the new. He feels that he has lost a God of love, tender and compassionate and found only an abstraction.
Not a God But God
The general thought is of a God, located somewhere, that man gets to.
Here the teacher must show him that the Christian Science God really gives him what he never had before, an omnipresent God, all good and no evil. Show him that the Christian Science God is a satisfying, satisfactory God.
Be very loving and patient with him ’til he grasps the true thought of God, which he really wants to do; only he does not know how to let go of the old.
Infinite
Christian Science teaches that God is infinite in every way, therefore there is nothing lacking. He is all knowledge and all knowing. Infinite Love and its infinite manifestation.
Man
What is Man?
Generic Man
Generic Man means all men — a family name — the infinite manifestation of Mind, the infinite idea or creation of Principle.
Generic man and the universe are one, as the expression of God.
Individual Man
Individual man is the individual consciousness of infinite Mind.
God is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation.
God manifests Himself as ideas and thoughts. These ideas which are conscious of the whole of God, are individual man.
Man reflects the fullness of God, whereas other ideas manifest less of Mind.
Infinite Mind asserts itself in the unfolding of ideas, as individual consciousness of good.
Man is not personal, neither is God, and we must get rid of the personal sense.
Individual man is not the full reflection or manifestation of Mind, but he reflects the fullness or allness of Mind.
Definition of True Man
The true individual man is the spiritual idea in which Truth is forever asserting itself as individual consciousness.
True Brotherhood
Basis of true brotherhood. Knowing is true being. Man only knows man by knowing what man knows. If I know what you know, then I know you.
In Science, each man is the understanding or knowing of God, hence they know each other, which is true brotherhood.
Can Man Be Sick?
If man is the understanding of God, is he a sinner, can he be sick, can he die, etc.?
Separation of Beliefs From Man
Sickness is not your sickness, pain is not your pain, discouragement is not your discouragement, etc.; it is itself, an abomination unto the Lord, a God-forsaken, miserable lie, and we must handle it in this way.
The minute you say that a pain is your pain, you cannot destroy it because it is you and inseparable from you.
The work of Christian Science is transformation, not annihilation.
THURSDAY, JUNE 21ST MORNING
Brief review of Man — generic and individual.
Contrast
Divine Mind expresses itself in ideas.
Mortal mind expresses itself in beliefs, and is a lie about God. All its claims are its own beliefs.
Man does not believe he has measles, etc., it is mortal mind’s belief about man.
Treat Mortal Mind
All treatment must hit mortal mind; man needs no treatment because man does not believe in evil; man is the knowing, the understanding, of God.
No matter what the belief of sin or disease is, it is always mortal mind which must be silenced.
Illustration
Illustration of fountain: various drops represent various beliefs of disease, etc.
Merely catching the drops called measles would not destroy measles. You must turn off the stream and that cuts off the belief.
Annihilate Mortal Mind
Get mortal mind in a corner and hit it square in the face, by knowing that it never existed, does not exist, never made anything, never had a material universe, never had a man or made a man, never had anything to do with man, never was anything or did anything.
Never speak of manifestations of mortal mind, error, animal magnetism, etc., but always of their beliefs. There are no such manifestations, but mortal mind believes that there are.
Mortal Mind Lies
Mortal mind expresses itself not in objects or things, but in thoughts, which it calls material and which are all lies about God, man and the universe.
Mortal mind has no use for matter; all it needs is a lot of lies about everything.
Mortal Mind Claim of Creator
Mortal mind’s first chief claim is that of being a creator. Its creation is illustrated by a tree, its blossoms, leaves, twigs, little branches, big branches, limbs, bigger limbs, etc., to the trunk, which comes from the roots. The root of all material creation is mortal mind.
Three Claims
Its great claims which precede its beliefs of creation are —
(1) Space Space being definable only as between objects, without objects, there is no space, therefore space is a lie and is an indefinable belief.
(2) Time Time being definable only as the recurrence of activity in material things, without matter, time is a lie and is an indefinable belief.
(3) Substance Substance is definable as matter. Organized matter is acknowledged to be destructible. Unorganized is claimed to be indestructible, but the only unorganized matter there is is the atom. The atom is a theory, therefore not matter, but a belief which mortal mind calls matter.
Conception
This disposes of the basis of mortal mind creation. This, together with sensuality which is sin, the belief of intelligence in matter, is the cause of the belief of conception, growth, and birth of the mortal.
The baby has no belief of intelligence, being mere animated thought. Its development is through the suggestion and education of mortal mind.
Basis of Heredity
Christian Science has uncovered what never was fully understood before, that besides the belief of a conscious mind and a material body, there is a third belief of “sub-conscious” or “latent” mind, and it is through this mind that pre-natal influences, in belief, and hereditary contamination work, and not by means of matter, but by mesmerism, as matter can transmit nothing.
Handling the Claim of Heredity
This is the claim to handle for all hereditary beliefs and every mortal is under that belief more or less, therefore it should be handled for every patient and for the practitioner.
Pre-natal mesmerism and hereditary contamination. Materiality is mesmerism.
We should deny the whole string of beliefs — no mortal mind conception, growth, birth, etc.
These things are not to be talked about nor taught to young students.
Mortal mind counterfeits all the ideas of God.
THURSDAY, JUNE 21ST AFTERNOON
Knowing Purifies
Man’s dominion consists in the knowing of all things.
Suppose a man to be poisoned by impure air or poisonous fumes — the first thing to do is to get him to the pure air.
Just so with the sinner, — the worse he is poisoned, the more he needs to go to God. Mortal mind says that he is too impure and that he will just stay in the impurity a while until he is purer before he goes to God.
God always blesses.
Plan of Salvation
A baby is the Adam and Eve belief. From that to the ascension is the history of God’s plan of salvation, which is not annihilation but transformation.
First, sinless mortality — but fall inevitable.
Mortal brotherhood, Cain and Abel. Brotherhood ruptured — Abel slain.
Then error so rampant that it was self-destroyed at the flood, leaving only an idea of good, as shown in Noah who was necessarily saved.
Abraham stood for one God, and faithfulness.
Jacob.
Moses, conviction of sin, the first to separate between good and evil in “Thou shalt not”. This was the first sense of need.
Prophecy of a savior began, which was brought to light in Mary’s spiritual perception of God as Father, bringing forth Jesus the Christ, whose understanding of man as God’s child, destroyed sin, sickness and death, and ultimated in his ascension above the beliefs of matter.
Immaculate Conception
The only true immaculate conception is Christian Science, but Christian Scientists recognize the world’s belief of Mary’s immaculate conception.
Only one such conception, only one Jesus, one Christ, and there can never be more. Any such claims are foolishness. Such a conception is not possible in Christian Science, because it recognizes both the fatherhood and motherhood of God, and denies material creation.
Never teach these deep things in primary class.
Two-Fold Operation of Mental Practice
Affirmation and denial are the two-fold operation of mental practice.
True affirmation necessarily includes denial, and denial is the consequent of affirmation.
Truth heals and Truth affirms, therefore affirmation heals, but it must include the understanding which denies. In most cases, the denial should specifically follow the affirmation.
Indulgences
Must a person stop indulgences during treatment?
Only those indulgences which produce the claim under treatment must be given up; or the willingness to make the effort must exist. Other indulgences need not be made an issue.
Giving up through will power is not giving up. Should not treat patients who want to continue in sin.
Illustration of the mesmerism of sin making sinner believe he cannot stop; Temperance Cause believes he cannot stop. To uncover this mesmerism, explain how a drunkard claims he cannot stop, has lost his will, in passing a saloon, he is impelled to go into that saloon and thus he asks for a drink.
If they should hand him a glass of rat poison instead of whiskey, would he drink it? No. But how could he refuse it if he has lost his will? This shows the falsity of the belief that he cannot resist. He needs to see that whiskey is rat poison of the worst kind.
FRIDAY, JUNE 22ND
Handling Animal Magnetism
Analysis of the handling of a simple case of animal magnetism — animal magnetism the term used hereafter for error.
Instruct students how to handle belief of measles.
First, the so-called matter laws and conditions:
Second, the thoughts of family, nurse, etc., where there is no malice. Plain, ignorant animal magnetism.
Third, malice due to opposition to Christian Science in doctors, relatives, etc., — malicious animal magnetism.
Fourth, Christian Scientists and mental practitioners who ignorantly and unintentionally hold the patient in error, — mental malpractice.
Fifth, the deliberate, intentional action of mental practitioners who work against the patient and Christian Science, — this is malicious mental malpractice, diabolism, demonology, black art, witchcraft, etc.
History of Mental Malpractice
History of the uncovering of the claim of mental malpractice.
Jesus had Judas.
Truth uncovers error. Uncovering means showing the nature of evil.
Second appearing of Christian Science brought out error in its highest form.
In early experience, Mrs. Eddy taught many Judases and they joined the mesmerists, worked against her and her students.
Patients relapsed, etc., and before their healing had been complete — they began relapsing.
Forms of Error Disclosed
God reveals, and error tells on itself. Some forms of error were disclosed.
Theosophists
Theosophists were arguing that readers should accumulate morbific secretion. Mr. Kimball, being told of this claim, handled it and immediately an abscess appeared on his hand, proving the fact of the lie.
Law of Return
“Christian Scientists and their patients shall have a return of their old beliefs, or they shall have irritation of the mucuous membrane.”
This was directed to all of Mrs. Eddy’s students, and was the belief of a law of mortal mind that was diffused, became operative and lodged in the consciousness of Christian Scientists, and they are under this law in belief to this day, unless they have recognized it as a belief and broken it.
Method of the Malpractitioners
These statements were argued and declared by groups regularly. Mother learned this and endeavored to break it. Today, the belief still exists and has not been met.
It touches Christian Scientists unconsciously and all Christian Science patients come under this belief of law.
Ignorance of Scientists
Very few Christian Scientists know of this and they think it is a return of old beliefs instead of pure mesmerism. Many never heard of it.
These arguments are, malice against the Truth, the healer, — the healer can’t heal, Christian Science can’t heal, patient will relapse, the statements of Truth will be reversed, etc.
Question asked the class: —
How would you handle a claim of the worst malicious mental malpractice, where you knew the mental malpractitioner by name — say, John Smith?
Separation From Mother
Mental malpractitioners then argued and made laws to separate Mother’s students from her. They used to know names and addresses and work on individuals.
Remonstrance
Then they formulated public remonstrance against Mother and the Cause was nearly crucified.
Hypnotic Poison
Then error argued poison hypnotically administered. The claim of poison hypnotically administered needs to be handled. Arguments of morphine, etc., subtle.
Discouragement
Then the following arguments were made to discourage Christian Scientists: —
“Christian Scientists shall not believe that they can heal the sick nor that Christian Science can heal; they shall not believe that they can handle mesmerism and shall not recognize mesmerism. All work shall be and is reversed by the law of reversal.”
People Bad Enough
There are lots of people wicked enough to kill by argument; 12,000 murders in the U.S. with the danger of being hung shows plenty of wickedness, especially when they can murder mentally without fear of being detected.
Aversion to Handling Animal Magnetism
Then the argument was made that Christian Scientists do not want to handle malicious animal magnetism, that it is simply a new devil in place of the old one. Also, if evil is nothing, what is the use of digging around in it?
Mental Assassination
Later on, malpractice manifested itself as mental assassination — several passed out, and the Cause of Christian Science trembled in the balance and it was thought that it might be lost to this generation.
In 1880, Mother recognized the claim and uncovered it, and had to meet the remonstrance of her students.
Evil All Exposed
Mortal mind includes all of evil, and whatever is included in that claim of evil will come out and be uncovered.
Mother says that the whole of evil has been exposed and no worse evil exists than is exposed today.
Error is not fully uncovered until uncovered as mesmerism.
Highest Form of Evil
The highest form of error is hypnotism, mental demonology, acting as minds over minds.
Mr. Kimball said concerning all these statements, “We are all lying like everything, and we must not believe a word we say.”
Method of Attacking a Christian Scientist
Suppose a hypnotist wants to get at a Christian Scientist who is too high for him; — a gulf exists and he does not know how to touch him. He will get next door to him through a so-called Christian Scientist who knows the latter, and then work through him by using suggestions he will accept.

Then came the era of church organization and church separation followed, and Christian Scientists were mesmerized to mangle each other.
Poisoning Press and Clergy
Recently the effort of malicious animal magnetism has been to poison the press, clergy, and to assault Christian Science by public print and public utterance in order to debauch Christian Science.
Recent effort has been made to nullify that endeavor.
Demonstrating for the Press
We must not admit that the press is antagonistic. Mother urges us to declare that there is no antagonistic press; the only press is God’s and can only do God’s work.
Stop saying that men are antagonistic, because thought externalizes itself.
The only editor, editorial or edition is God’s.
There is no power in mental malpractice to govern anything. We must break down the belief that mental malpractice can do anything.
We must be very careful not to think that people cannot read or understand.
Self-Condemnation
Experience of Mr. Kimball.
Evil is one evil. Not my evil or your evil. So apt to think it is “my fault”. Mother said that it was his fault because he had no business to believe a lie.
You never get rid of hypnotic suggestion by blaming yourself.
Mr. K. was practically raised from the dead and was so enlightened that he is now impervious to scorn.
Immunity
Illustrated this by a keyboard of a piano with a silent key. No matter how much animal magnetism plays on it, it gets no response from that key.
After Jesus had overcome sin, sickness, and death through the resurrection, no belief of sick man could get to him.
When you lose a sense of a particular error, you cannot be touched by that sense.
Culmination of Hypnotism
All is Mind, and thought is externalized. Always expect good, etc.
All evil will ultimately externalize itself through persons. Then will come the culmination of the voluntary action of hypnotism.
Only those who through the action of Christian Science recognize this will be able to stand that day. Others will go awry.
The scientifically Christian can stand. Instead of being afraid, we should contemplate this time with rejoicing.
Teaching
Teach this in a degree to all students. Be careful not to cause fear. Explain the mystery of evil and how to meet it. All Truth is self evident Truth.
Admit as a fact in belief that there is nothing so vile, etc., that it is not included in mortal mind, and somebody bad enough to manifest it. Admit this as a belief.
Handling Animal Magnetism
No human being can handle animal magnetism. God is the only power, influence, intelligence, that handles animal magnetism.
Show the necessity of keeping the lamp filled.
Arguments of Mental Malpractice
The Christian Scientist conspicuously needs to take cognizance of beliefs of arguments of mental malpractice, as follows: —
(1) That Christian Scientists shall have a return of old beliefs.
(2) That they shall not recognize mesmerism as being the cause of their beliefs. They shall think it is themselves. (Illustrated by a claim of sprained ankle handled as mesmerism.)
All trouble to Christian Scientists is caused entirely by mesmerism or indulgence in sin. They must be conscious that they can heal the sick and that they cannot get sick.
We must handle mesmerism as mesmerism and be on the alert to recognize it. Then we are on the way to destroy it. (Illustrated by colic of a child.)
Instinct and Subconscious Mind
We must specifically deny that there is any latent, unconscious, subconscious, or human mind or instinct or anything that can be acted through as a channel. Instinct is a part of the unconscious law, in belief.
Mental Poison
Take up the whole subject of mental poison, not with every treatment but in a general sense. Symptoms of mental poison sometimes suggest the error.
According to homoeopathy, cold is arsenical poison; lethargy, depraved taste, etc., ether and morphine; sore eyes, mercury, etc. It is not necessary for the practitioner to familiarize himself with this. Symptoms should not be related generally, not because of fear but to avoid contamination.
Mental Clawing
Protect against mental clawing. Teach students that you are the same as other persons and that God alone is their help.
Make a transparency of yourself, and not a dam. Then they can see God.
Healing in Spite of Surroundings
Healer must know that he can heal in spite of everything, and no matter what the patient says or who he says it to. Do not put patients in a hot house or forbid them to talk.
People say they have much to contend with in the surrounding thought. If they admit it, this impairs their work. Declare that there is nothing to contend with.
Patients From the Devil
Patients coming from the devil are: — spiritualists; spiritualism is mental poison. Spiritualists will eventually come out but they must be healed of spiritualism, which is almost impossible. Avoid them as patients. Also mental freaks such as mental scientists, theosophists, etc. To heal them is like lifting a house.
Don’t be so willing to fix everybody all right. Do things that can be done reasonably.
Avoid Roman Catholics as patients.
Law of Inability to Heal
Handle the claim that Christian Scientists cannot heal the sick. It acts until you smash it. Truth’s appearing puts it out.
Mentally unravel it and root it out. Declare that no malpractice can mesmerize you to make you believe you cannot heal the sick. You must break the mortal mind law by declaring that you can. It is just as much a law as measles for a child.
Reversal
The malpractitioner’s law of reversal must be denied and included in the work. This law says, “All the work of Christian Scientists shall be reversed and is reversed, and this reversal is a law of reversal.”
Aggressive Mental Suggestion
A more recent phase is aggressive mental suggestion. This is when the malpractitioner gets at you individually or as a whole and maintains a continuous and oft recurring argument that is so persistent that it formulates itself in your belief. The object is to impinge the belief on your consciousness.

Animal magnetism will reach you through any conceivable or possible door that you have, or leave open.
Handling Unknown Error
Watching and praying alone will enable you to detect and handle it. Illustrated by serpent story. How to handle it without knowing it is there. Only the wisdom of God, that delivers through prayer for guidance, wisdom, intelligence, foreknowledge, that uncovers, foreknows, etc.
True Handling of Animal Magnetism
Prayer alone handles animal magnetism. Christian prayer makes possible that reflection and consciousness which frees instantly by bringing one God, one Mind to light. Right prayer is the way to deliverance.
When consciousness is with God, then animal magnetism is handled, but not merely by having said it.
It is God-with-us, the doer, the helper, the actor, the heavenly blessedness and everything.
Not by Rule
We cannot handle animal magnetism by rule or mechanical contrivance.
When the mellowing influence of love touches consciousness in peace, then is animal magnetism being handled.
Alertness
Be alert, as animal magnetism will incite you to indolence and apathy. It will affect students and make them partly satisfied with logic, etc.
Students will be arrested by arguments or moral idiocy and be pleased with self-hood. They will find faults in others but have no self repentance.
Must Not Get Discouraged
The temptation will come for him to be discouraged. Malpractice makes him think it is himself instead of mesmerism.
God Never So
Is God, Spirit, Mind, etc., discouraged? Is man discouraged? Is the Mind of man discouraged? Is anything of man discouraged? Are you discouraged? No.
Understanding Heals
The knowing of Truth is the Christ. No people deny Christ more assiduously than Christian Scientists! Christ is within and is manifested on the flesh.
The understanding of Christian Science heals, reforms, etc. We deny Christ within men when we deny this Truth and say that we have not the understanding and that we do not understand the Truth. We say that we do not know how to heal — are not good enough to heal. This seems like virtue, etc., but we must stop being fooled.
Animal Magnetism Only Belief
Animal magnetism only touches us through a belief of a sense of error. The safety is in recognizing that claim and denying the sense of it. Animal magnetism is its own impulse and its own concept.
Animal Magnetism Does Not Argue
We have been talking about the argument of animal magnetism. Does animal magnetism argue to God and man? No — only to itself. Then stop admitting it, and disentangle this claim from yourself.
Already we are perfect in God. There is no need to wait. Right thought is right man.
SATURDAY, JUNE 23RD
Claim of Death
The claim of death should be handled for nearly every patient. All disease tends toward death.
Evil Administered Hypnotically
If any form of evil is put upon you hypnotically, you will not get rid of it by blaming yourself.
If you ask a mesmerist to explain, he would say that thought is mesmerism, not the personality of man.
Power of Thought
All thought is mesmeric in its nature. Thought has just as much power as it thinks it has in belief. Ordinary thought does not know of its power.
Hypnotism super-imposed is the most dangerous. There is mesmerism and mesmerism. The American mesmerists are as babes in arms compared with the French, and they are as babes compared with those of India. Most efforts are limited because their thought is limited.
All Mesmerism
All matter is a belief of it.
All action of matter is a belief of it.
All action and matter is animal magnetism and mesmerism.
The phenomena of matter are phenomena of mesmerism.
When hypnotism knows itself as hypnotism, then nature can be re-produced.
Hindu
Christian Scientists must claim that hypnotism can do anything that matter can do.
(Illustration of voluntary hypnotism.) A doctor had studied hypnotism and went to India to learn how to protect himself from it. He went to a Hindu adept and told him that he had studied hypnotism and knew all about it and merely wanted to know how to protect himself from it. While he was talking, a terrific storm came up, the lightning and thunder being more severe than he had ever experienced. He was terribly frightened and just as he was about to die as he thought, the storm suddenly vanished, and he saw the smiling Hindu standing in front of him, saying, “Why, my dear Sir, you do not know anything about hypnotism.”
Presently he found himself climbing a ladder, an endless one, and he found himself climbing and not getting anywhere and unable to stop. He was on the verge of exhaustion when suddenly he found himself on the ground with the smiling Hindu beside him, who again said, “My dear Sir, you don’t know anything about hypnotism.”
Storms Involuntary
Our storms are involuntary mesmerism; the involuntary action of mortal mind mesmerism.
First hypnotism is involuntary, then it evolves voluntary mesmerism.
Hypnotism can produce death.
Hypnotism Claims to Be Unlimited
Christian Scientists know more about hypnotism than a trained hypnotist himself.
Hypnotism is mortal mind manifested. It is the claim of action of mortal mind to be something. You cannot handle it if you believe it limited. You must see that it claims to be unlimited.
Oriental witchcraft and esoteric magic must be specifically handled.
Hindu Magic
Another illustration of Hindu magic was this: — the adept threw one end of a rope in the air and held the other end. The rope became straight and the upper end was invisible. A man then came and climbed up this rope. Presently, a severed leg came falling down, then an arm, then another leg and so on until all the parts of the man had fallen. In a moment, the man was again whole and the rope was lying on the ground.
Also a tree was made to spring up where there had been none. First some fruit grew on it, then afterwards it was full of babies where the fruit had been.
This is error asserting itself and is done through mental concentration and knowing that it is hypnotism and that it is possible.
The action of a camera is involuntary mesmerism.
Two Babies

You sit in a room and a hypnotist brings in a baby. Subsequently, a doctor brings in a baby. One is voluntary and the other involuntary mesmerism.
Mortal mind can do anything that matter claims to do.
Dreams, insanity, intoxication, are all beliefs of mesmerism.
Christian Scientists must know that all phenomena of matter are hypnotism and can be produced by hypnotism.
The claims of black magic, etc., must be met.
No Death
We say there is no death. Jesus was the first who declared it.
We must bear witness of animal magnetism as a false belief only, until thought is exalted above all evil.
If we watch and pray, working out our own salvation, then God with us as Intelligence exposes it as falsity and we must resist the devil.
Handling Animal Magnetism
Animal magnetism, the claim of evil, can be handled only by the two-fold way, the declaration of Truth and the unreality of evil.
Spurious Christian Scientists say that there is no evil, so what’s the use of paying any attention to it. We must always say that it is nothing but a claim or belief of animal magnetism, and animal magnetism is nothing.
The only genuine and absolute way to resist hypnotism is by means of Christian Science.
As we advance, error may exert itself on a higher and more subtle plane, but it is not harder. We must not suppose that the higher, the harder.
Raising the Dead
We Christian Scientists ought to raise the dead and do so soon. We cannot do it until we say it. We must not think it impossible, the thought must expect to do it.
Christian Scientists still have an average fear. Christian Science has not yet asserted its supremacy. As soon as the dead are raised, the fear will be broken.
What is necessary is that thought should be spiritualized and Christianized. The knowing that there is no death and never was any.
Consciousness always externalized, bringing back to life improved beliefs. Raising the dead, restoring to what is called life, Christian Science commands. According to God’s word, it can be done, and we can do it.
One of the false utterances is that mortality is coaxing Christian Scientists to die.
True Expectation
We must endeavor to ‘touch the hem’, and to expect all and everything. Declare happiness and act so.
No Past, No Future
There is never anything but now; no past nor tomorrow. Illusions never come.
God is the God of now. There is no God of tomorrow.
Handle error as present illusion.
Your fear is a channel of mesmerism to your business.
Good Externalizes Itself
All power, etc., is in good. This saying of good, externalizes itself because good cannot return unto itself void.
Death
No mortal dies without first giving consent.
Mortals are mesmerized by the belief that death is a stepping-stone to another plane.
Everything that pretends to reconcile you to death is the very climax of animal magnetism and must be handled.
Question was asked about dying in the Lord. A dozen years ago, and even now, we seem to be very material. Remember the standpoint from which, and the age to which, she is writing. Shall we not turn our faces higher now? Shall we not expect it?
Look at thought. First, the original mortal, human thought. God bestowed upon it a sense of being that is spiritual and immortal. This Christianizes and reforms him and then appears a higher type, more like God. This touches the hem of the garment of Christian Science and produces a good Christian Scientist, honest, demonstrating unity with God. If he passes through the belief of death, this is not good, God did not cause it, and it was not desirable, but he died in the Lord, and if he has realized life, he will never again die. Therefore, Christian Science patients are better off than other patients, even with one treatment.
Temptation may reach us on this account. There is no such thing scientifically as dying in the Lord. There is an intermediate condition, which is a blessed assurance.
Raising the Dead
The world is not ready to accept the reports of raising the dead. The average mortal does not want to hear of Christian Science healing, and such reports only add to the inflammation of mortal mind. Jesus was killed because he was a healer.
Jesus was conscious that there is no death. Christian Scientists must know that every claim of error can be handled. Animal magnetism is not his animal magnetism. He is not responsible for it but only for his belief in it. All error is the offspring of the one mortal mind.
Students get a notion that there is no animal magnetism, but only your belief in it. This is wrong and brings on a state of self-condemnation which does not handle it. We must pull out all weeds and not simply believe that there are none.
Forms of Animal Magnetism
Mortal mind divides itself into certain forms of animal magnetism.
(1) A belief of theology. Scholastic theology stops at the wrong place. Claims that God ordained evil and death and that they are right.
(2) A belief of false philosophy which tries to kill, claiming that death is inevitable.
(3) A belief of false science, claiming that substance is matter, man and the universe are matter, including mortality.
(4) A belief of spiritualism. “Beckoning”, the belief that departed spirits beckon the living and can control them, through the yearning for them. This belief acts mesmerically. “Obsession”, belief of despotic control. In belief, spiritualism is an active agent for evil.
(5) A belief of mediumship. Claim of power to be a medium for another. This is one of the evil mesmeric activities.
(6) A belief of clairvoyance, which claims that one can read the thought of another.
(7) Theosophy. Believers are nearly all occultists, mesmerists, etc. It proposes to dispose of the immortality of evil but really perpetuates it.
(8) Astrology. A general and ancient belief of planetary influence over the lives of mortals, working through a law of horoscope.
All mortals are under the belief of astrology. Christian Science alone gets man out from under it.
(9) Fatalism. A mesmeric influence claiming to be inevitable.
(10) Allied beliefs of hypnotism.
Mesmerism, hypnotism, Hinduism, occultism, esoteric magic, black art, black magic, oriental witchcraft, demonology, diabolism, are all designated forms of evil.
(11) Psychology. The biggest humbug of the age, permeating the whole of education. The study of foolishness. Includes psychic power or force, psychic circles, etc. Claim of one mind controlling another through vibrations. A belief of evil.
(12) Thought transference, telepathy, etc.
(13) Palmistry. Only a mesmeric belief.
Must not fail to handle the material beliefs of heat, cold, polarity, cohesion, adhesion, etc.
Counterfeits
Mortal mind is an aggregation of mortal beliefs. There is a spiritual fact for all mortal normal things. The counterfeit necessarily has an original. The invention of the telephone, etc., is a belief about something real.
Types
What are things types of? Simply of lies. The attempt to spiritualize material things is rubbish. Space, distance, and material objects are only beliefs of them.
Law of Correspondence
Do certain beliefs produce certain diseases? Specially designated diseases are not always produced by certain thoughts, and such practice was strongly denounced. There is no law of correspondence between them, and sin and disease are not related in mental anatomy.
Illustration: a certain doctor said that if he could run everything into fits, he was all right because he could always cure fits.
Treatment
Overhauling mental practice.
Often the Christian Science treatment is not impelled with proper faith. Treatment is knowing, asking with the certainty of receiving.
Treatment is not directed to persons, to disease, or to a body. All is in the realm of mind.
All error is a belief and disease lingers because we treat it as disease instead of as a belief.
If a patient said two times two equalled five, you would not have to examine his throat in order to heal him.
We must have scientific substantive faith.
Unknown Error
How would you treat when you did not know the error? Truth uncovers error, and you must expect to know what you ought to know. Know that you have met the claim.
Expect to heal every claim with one treatment. Always rise to the height, prayerfully, for instantaneous healing.
The first treatment heals but it takes time for physical derangements to disappear. Never tell patients that they are healed in one treatment.
Mortal Mind’s Claims
All beliefs are claims of mortal mind. We must understand that there is one infinite Mind which includes all Life, which is man’s life; there is one body, one Substance and Good, and all being is spiritual and perfect.
The scientific action of Truth as consciousness demolished belief.
Begin by resolving all error into a claim of mortal mind, then demolish the claim from that standpoint.
Chemicalization or Animal Magnetism
How will you know whether it is chemicalization or animal magnetism when a patient gets worse?
You will often find that students have ups and downs, and patients likewise, but when all gets worse, it is mental interference.
Do not admit a return of beliefs, but handle that claim. Recognizing and handling this belief will often free a patient immediately.
Patients often relapse into sin on account of the mesmeric belief of that law.
MONDAY, JUNE 25TH MORNING SESSION
Music
The evidence of the senses is always false. We cannot spiritualize material concepts. Anything that a material ear can hear is unreal. What we call music is not music at all. The unreality of matter is the first step.
Real harmony and music are included in divine Mind, and man manifests them. We can break down the sense of limitation and so get a better belief of music and musicians.
True music is a spiritual idea cognized alone by spiritual sense. Christian Science teaches that you never heard spiritual music and never can.
Through knowing the unreality of material music, we get an improved belief or true belief.
Material music is not a type of real music and does not resemble it in any particular; it is a poor counterfeit.
Giving Up Old Church
Do not tell patients that they have to give up their old churches, but they cannot be Christian Scientists and remain forever in their churches.
Pre-Existence
In Science all is now. Material pre-existence is an impossibility. God being self-existent, man will have no sense of pre-existence.
Memory
Man has no memory. Memory is a human sense. Man is reflection. Man is spiritual consciousness in which Truth is forever asserting itself. The memory of a past is false. Future is false.
Poise
We must poise our thought more radically in absolute Science.
Treating the Dead
Mrs. Eddy said that if a Christian Scientist dies, you may treat him for three days in the hope of raising him.
Soggy
In teaching a class, do not let them get soggy, lugubrious, gloomy, etc.
Christian Scientists should be happy. Break the action of mesmerism when teaching animal magnetism. Make them cheerful.
Class Relation
Relation of teacher and student. All evil thought is evil, no matter where it is. Students must be obedient to God. The teacher should not be taken for a model and must not compel students to be obedient to him.
Suffering
All passing of suffering is malpractice. Righteous suffering never passes suffering.
Treatment for Sin
When no specific sin is manifested, the treatment should cover the moral question in a general way, knowing that there is no sin, no temptation, no fall, no penalty, no sinner, no effect of sin, and that man cannot sin. Wipe out all sense of sin.
One Treatment
Always endeavor to heal in one treatment.
The thought is often held that the patient or practitioner is at fault if a case is not healed. This is false. You have no right to damn another person when you fail to heal a case.
Sometimes, it is persistent contending and declaring that is needed to heal a case.
We must always recognize that and admit a claim.
More Than One Practitioner
Several persons working on a case. The more we acquaint others with our claims, the worse.
One good practitioner is enough for any case, and two poor ones are no better than one poor one.
Is there a time when a second person can come in and not do harm? This depends on the person. The work must be intelligently done. Two or more can work and handle the claim sometimes, but indiscriminate mixing and doubling up is bad. A frightened practitioner had better give up the case.
When you treat a patient, you are afraid, but when you treat a claim there is no fear.
Frightened Practitioner
Suppose a practitioner is afraid. It is not his fear. Fear is always itself and is always about something that has no existence. You must always declare that fear has nothing to do with the case, and neither has the fear of the practitioner.
Fear is the effect of mesmerism.
In helping a practitioner over fear, analyze the belief and show that it is merely a false claim.
We must always recognize a claim as a claim.
All error exists as thought, in belief. If you do not recognize the wrong thought, it is not destroyed.
Denial Necessary
If you declare the allness of God without the denial of error, sickness would probably follow.
Uniformity of Treatment
There is need of a uniform method of treating. God heals the sick through Jesus Christ, the divine Word understood, — true knowledge.
Get rid of a sense of a personal healer. The Christ understanding never has a patient or a person.
Truth’s appearing as idea uncovers and demolishes error. This is the action of Truth over error.
Wrong Method
Illustration of personality in treatment. Case of a mother treating her child. Had in mind a spiritual child, herself, animal magnetism, and God, which was three too many.
Man
Knowing God is man.
Club
Do not use God as a club to club animal magnetism with.
Metaphysical Healing
A material man, sick and dying, is the claim. Handle the error that calls itself mind. The only mind he has is God.
Thought is naturally directed without addressing a person. Absent treatment is not the same as talking to a patient, but is more a communion with God. The same with silent treatment.
Consciousness always alone. Even with a thousand people present, it would still be only a belief of a thousand people.
There are no mortals nor sick ones. No sick man, no sick matter, no fear. Not afraid of sick man in the next street.
Constant Handling
Mother says to handle animal magnetism three times a day and all the time in between.
Handle theosophy, etc., frequently enough, as well as mental malpractice.
Malpractice
Science and Health and the Bible are sometimes used to malpractice with, by improper use of quotations, to force personal views on others.
This is a phase of malicious malpractice. Handle this for yourself.
Eliminate Personality
Hostile thoughts of personalities must be met by Love. Love alone meets one and masters malice. It is necessary to know no personality.
Recognizing evil as person does not destroy it. You do not handle animal magnetism until you lose all sense of personality. Love alone does this. See it as a claim. The personal way influences malpractice.
To love the person is an improvement, but the scientific way is to work on until there is no person in it. Strike your blow at the impersonal error.
In handling the worst possible case of malicious malpractice where the person is known, never say that there is no J. W. It is most important to handle fear in every case.
TUESDAY, JUNE 26TH MORNING SESSION
More Than One Practitioner
Question of two or more practitioners treating a case at once.
We must not advocate this, yet occasionally it is allowable, but must be done very wisely.
Teacher and Student
The relation between teacher and student must be wisely considered.
Malicious animal magnetism is often used by teachers in attempting to control students. It is malpractice to sit in damnation. Students must be loyal to God first.
Do not even hold students in the Association unless you know that it is the impulse of animal magnetism that is driving them.
Separation
One most active form of animal magnetism is to separate teacher and student.
Whenever a student is disgruntled about his teacher, he should go to the teacher at once.
Teachers are liable to be greatly misjudged. This is the cross.
Students should make every effort to be in accord with their teacher. If both are halfway decent, they ought to be able to get along.
It is error to steer students to a teacher.
Teaching relatives, — use wisdom about it.
Attitude of one teacher to another teacher’s student is embodied in the Golden Rule, which is the etiquette of teachers. Be careful about animal magnetism in this regard.
If a student asks your advice about trouble with his teacher, send him to a Scientist who is not a teacher. This is scientific conduct.
Compelling Treatment
The secret compelling of practitioners to treat a person is rank error. Such workers are mental marauders.
The craving desire for help may become mesmerism.
Student of the Book
What constitutes a student of the Book?
Such a student is one who through reading the book and by his own understanding, heals himself and others without the intervention of another person. You would not hesitate to give a helping hand to such a student.
Mental Scientists
Mental scientists must utterly repudiate their former teaching before they can become true Christian Scientists. False literature in a house is like poison lying around loose.
Self-Dependence
After teaching, if students fail to handle a belief, show them how, instead of doing it for them.
Etiquette
Etiquette of practitioners. They must avoid holding patients under bondage and exercising a proprietary right over them. Treating another teacher’s students is allowable but must be done wisely.
The relation of teacher and student should not be allowed to interfere with democratic church government.
Treatment by Proxy
Treating by another practitioner than the one a patient thinks he is treating him, is rank dishonesty. Healing is more than the mere process of grinding out treatments.
Self-Condemnation
Self-condemnation and a denial of self is mesmerism. True selfhood should be declared.
Whatever believes both good and evil leads to trouble. The only true self-knowledge is the knowledge of good. Separate the true individual from error, sin.
Handle sin in this way, man never was a sinner; this knowledge destroys the claim of sin.
Mourning
Do not interfere with people who wear mourning. This is audible mesmerism.
Charges
Charges for treatment.
$1.00 for each present treatment, or $5.00 a week.
$2.00 for the first treatment.
Additional for visits, according to time.
Make concessions for long continued treatment.
Students should get paid for their work.
Know that students can pay for teaching and healing. Must not hold a poverty thought over them.
Handling Animal Magnetism
Case of handling animal magnetism.
Take the claim as a patient but not the malpractitioner. Do it all without manipulating the person.
Don’t talk to animal magnetism. What you do say is about it.
What is in operation in a treatment?
Begin by declaring what is. This brings the at-one-ment with God, Love.
Declare and linger in the thought.
There is one infinity of good.
There is one infinity of Love.
Life is Love and is all.
One Being, Mind, includes all.
Man’s life is infinite Love, perfection and good. Thought is in Love and Life, in peace and joy, and that is man.
Thought lingers in good until good declares itself. With that mental poise, there is no hate, wrath, indignation, nothing but God.
Do not proceed until God is with us, then divine Intelligence is with us, and then God does it.
What does the Christ do in the mental realm by declaring?
There is no mortal mind, no material man, no mortal man, no malicious mind, no evil, no animal magnetism, because all is infinite Mind, and there is no mortal mind.
Deny the claim of channel, way or means. It has no mental malpractitioner and is not a law maker. God is the only law maker, therefore, no malpractitioner ever made any law and there is no law of malpractice. Mental malpractitioner is only one of the phases of the claim.
Then hatred, envy, malice, etc., cannot act as such; cannot as such exercise any influence or control, have no law, desire, or will. Malice has no actor.
Malicious mental malpractice is neither Intelligence, Truth nor Science.
Thus, all the mind is taken out of it and all the law. Then take the power out of it. It never did anything. Saying that it “can’t do” thus and so means it has done or can do.
Malpractice never did anything. Even if it seems to do anything, it is still nothing.
Illustration:
If you took a malpractitioner and showed him that he could not do anything and never had done anything, and had never accomplished anything that he claims to have done, you discourage and weaken him most effectually.
Annulling
We must annul that which seems to be real.
Beginning Treatment
All treatment begins with God, God with us. Abide in good. It is the activity of Christ, the spiritual idea, that heals. Then self disappears and there is no sense of having given a treatment. Instead of “I” doing it, it is God that does it.
It is always God covering the case. It does not talk to error but uncovers error and the animating influences that tend to move the malpractitioner.

Apathy
Christian Scientists need to watch that they do not lapse into apathy, indolence, resentment, intolerance, etc. Animal magnetism reaches a student here, with an apathetic affection.
It is necessary to watch lest he be touched by sin. This error causes neglect to work for the Cause.
Mesmerism and its suggestions are one.
Pain and mesmerism are one.
Apathy is mesmerism.
Sin is mesmerism.
Mesmerism comes as sin.
Watchfulness
Watch constantly so as to know whether you are governed by animal magnetism or by God. We need waking up and must not go to sleep. Keep students awake and alert.
Christian Science is downright goodness, manifested.
Teach students to handle animal magnetism by a very simple case.
Tumor
Illustration of beliefs and their specific antidotes: —
Mind is the only substance. There is no abnormal growth.
Is there any spiritual tumor or wart? Back of a wart is a perfect finger. Back of a tumor is a perfect body.
Illustrated by his own finger which was injured and healed but was left deformed. Knowing that he had only a perfect finger, it grew to perfect shape.
All normal physical conditions counterfeit something real.
Abnormal conditions do not counterfeit anything. There is no material body, man’s body is perfect.
Itch
This is a belief of parasitic growth and life. There is nothing that can impair or infest the body of man.
A parasite is not a counterfeit of anything spiritual.
Colic
Not necessarily to be treated through the mother. Can be healed in spite of the mother. Handle the belief of subconscious mind. Separate it from the child.
Deafness
Hearing is perfect. Ears are perfect. Man’s senses are spiritual. Nerves are perfect. Man is perfect.
Sexual Poison
Tumors, cancers, abscesses, boils, running sores, etc., are usually a belief of a law of sexual poison.
Paralysis
A belief of inaction and nerves. The only nerves are perfect nerves. Mind and action can never become inaction.
Consumption
Lungs cannot be consumed. Body cannot be consumed. Man cannot be consumed.
Lungs have nothing to do with Life.
There is nothing to infest man.
Sight
Sight and eyes are perfect. It is God’s business to provide perfect eyes and we must expect them.
Appetite
Three kinds of appetite claim to perpetuate human life: —
Sexual, which procures life.
Food, which continues life.
Sleep, which recuperates life.
Scientists must never interfere, even mentally, with the marriage relation, its contemplation, or childbirth, with other Scientists.
Condemning marriage, married people, or mothers is malpractice.
Would not advise people to marry but would not prevent it. Would say ‘God bless you’. We must let people work this thing out themselves.
Death
Treating a dying or dead person.
A dying person needs the thought of Life as well as the handling of other laws.
In the case of a dead person, handle only the belief of death.
Foolishness
The foolishness of many Scientists was spoken of, for instance — “How’s your mother?” Ain’t got no mother. God’s my mother. Scientists need wisdom.
Hatred and Malice
In handling hatred and malice, make it impersonal by dissociating it from the individual and by handling it as mortal mind.
Addressing Error
Question of addressing the error. How long would you talk to it? When would you stop, if unreal?
Does God talk to it?
Does man talk to it?
Methods
The methods outlined here are not to necessarily condemn other methods.
Summary
Summary of handling animal magnetism.

“Better Way”
Difference between arguments and the “better way”. Treatment is knowing. To know the Truth is the more excellent way.
Argument is sometimes necessary.
Mother
Mother is not mysterious and queer. She wishes that people would think of her more as a human being.
